Week...dammit, I can't remember that far back...last week, Atomic VIPU was
vanquished once again by a tough opponent. While most of the opposing team's
members appeared to be no older than 14 or 15, they proved to be more than a
match for VIPU's lackadaisical first half play.
VIPU was able to keep pace the second half, but were unable to close the
already formidable gap.
Key mistakes and giveaways were hallmarks of VIPU's play, including a key
4-on-1 in which star striker Blair passed the ball directly to the only
defender within 50 feet of the play.
Still, all the blame can't be placed on Blair, as someone had to pass him
the ball in the first place, illustrating a complete lack of judgment and
foresight on their part.
Still, some high pressure on a prima donna, dribbling keeper resulted in two
goals by Paul, and salvaged some small measure of respect for the
floundering VIPU squad.
Bad results against the top of the table have left VIPU with little hope of
reaching the vaunted third place finish so many expected of this young team. "I bet they wish they'd never traded me to Leeds, now," former VIPU
bench-warmer Scott Kirkwood told reporters in a taped interview.
League sources said a win this week against whatever team it is we're
playing would keep Atomic from relegation. But others in the league office
suggested one more temper point from Atomic Will and the team would likely
slip into the dreaded Riff-Raff league next season.
Some in the media have blamed manager Willy Toribio for not showing up for a
single match to provide halftime snacks and/or puddings. Others have placed
the blame squarely on the shoulders of captains Trixie and Kelley for not
purchasing mesh jerseys.
And a number of columnists have targeted keeper Tara's play, suggesting that
if she saved every single shot, VIPU would more than likely be undefeated
this year.
In the end, the finger-pointing and nail-biting for Atomic VIPU fans,
players, coaches and media pundits will continue for at least 2 more hours.
And then...
