:: Game 4

Week 4 of Atomic's season will be remembered as the Game of the Guests. With only 6 regular VIPUers available for play (the others served a one-game relegation to the riff-raff league for disciplinary reasons ranging from gambling on Wilmer FC games to participating in soft-core crush fetish films), several practice squad VIPUers were called up to Atomic duty. DC Thunder kept things close for the first half, but eventually the mish-mash version of VIPU was able to string together some fine goals and put the game out of reach.

There were of course the familiar aspects of the Atomic game that fans have come to expect:
  • Will teetered on the edge of picking up additional temper points, but instead was able to focus that rage into 2 stellar goals.
  • Tara continued to play brilliantly in goal (although she did allow a soft shot to find its way into the back of the net late, and really should bring more of those brownie-things her mom makes to say "I'm sorry.").
  • Leana and Trixie continued to control the midfield and Dan took sole possession of the scoring lead (6 goals) with a late header.
  • And Blair was also on the field at times.
Still, the 10-5 result would have been close to impossible without the skills of the VIPU irregulars.

Shiff donned the Atomic uniform for the second time, and added another goal to his rapidly growing resume. Meg also joined the VIPUers yet again and set up an important goal. Amani, on loan from Wilmer, set up Dan's header and was able to hit the keeper's hands a dozen times from close range, obviously softening the goaltender for other strikers.

But, one guest stood out in particular as the reason VIPU was able to secure the victory: Greg.

This unknown from Ireland scored a wicked goal from long range which obviously lifted Atomic's spirits and opened the floodgates to goals galore. Greg also stood tall on defense, stuffing several shots and distributing the ball brilliantly to waiting teammates.

While likely to never be heard from again (he announced his retirement during a post-game press conference in which he said he enjoyed his moment in the spotlight, but that he needed to spend more time with his family), Greg will always be remembered fondly by Atomic fans as the savior against DC Thunder.

The win sets up an important match this week against Capital Strikers, one of the 2 other teams standing with VIPU at second place. The game will be played under the lights in Rockville at 11:40pm. The late start time is not expected to scare away the fans, who are already waiting in line to gain access to the match. Rumors of tickets going for $250-400 a piece on E-Bay are likely unfounded as there are no tickets.

So, until next week...what?...he was?!...apparently Scott Kirkwood was also at last week's win over Thunder and tapped in 4 easy goals. However, like the tickets, this rumor is likely to be completely bogus. Pretend calls to Kirkwood were not returned by press time, and agent Tom Morley would only say that Kirkwood complained of a "sore back" late Thursday night. This reporter will not rest until the mystery is solved and all the facts are in. Now for a quick nap.
